Brakes? Brakes? Brakes?

Holy Crude they are a ton of brakes out there these days!

Well, next on my list for fixes is brakes. OEM, slotted, drilled, slotted and drilled.....

All I want is good brakes that stop my Titan better than the OEM mush! On some other sites I've seen Frozen Rotors, Discount Tire new brakes, R1 Concepts (thanks to Pops) and the list goes on.

What's your opinion on the slotted/drilled stuff and do you have any recommendations.

Here's what I have... 4x4, 17" wheels and I tow occasionally a 7500 lbs trailer and I can't spend $1000's for top of the line.

Thanks,
PB

Well, I'm still using the stock brake system. You mention you don't have a ton of money. I'd suggest that you change the pads first, that is the least expensive possibility of improvement. Second would be to replace the stock rubber brake lines with braided stainless/teflon brake hoses. Finally, I'd look into aftermarket rotors. I don't know how much improvement you get from drilling or slotting the rotors. Supposedly, it provides a vent for pad dust and the very thin film of gasses which form between the pads and the rotor during braking.

I think the biggest challenge would be to improve the "feel" at the pedal. I'm not real happy with the "mushiness" my '05 brakes provide. Perhaps the pads and hoses would stiffen that up some.

Seems to me that at one time Squid did change his pads to a different brand with good results. I don't recall which ones though.

I hear alot about the EBC stuff.

EBC Brakes

I recently swapped out my pads and made the mistake of putting ceramic pads on the front. Big goof up. These things dust like crazy. I'd stay with the semi-metallic pads front and rear.

So, were the ceramic pads you installed made by EBC? IF not, who made them so we can avoid them when we order.

TIA

Duralast Gold CMAX Ceramic Pads from AutoZone

Here's what I got. Supposedly the best pads they had. Apparently not for our application.

I've been told pads and rotors need to be done in a set. So if your truck came with metallic you shouldn't swap them to ceramic unless you change the rotors and vice versa which is why I changed both at 60,000 miles.

Regarding Squid's comment on mixing compounds and rotors. I think that if you get the rotors turned you could change to different pads without a problem. This turning process would remove all the pad material that had been imbedded in the rotor surfaces. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't replace my rotors unless I was going to a higher performance rotors such as the "big brakes" on the later model Titans.

I wonder if anyone has done any experimentation with a different brake booster or valving systems to improve pedal feel.
