Won't shift out park, but I fixed it.

Well Saturday we were working on the fence up around the house and needed the father-in-laws Titan and trailer to carry over a couple of gates and install them. Well to make a long story short, it would not shift out of park. While the father-in-law was trying to figure it out, I went in and done a search on all the Titan forums I'm a member of and found that if the brake fuse was shot, it would disable the brake release mechanism located on top of the streering column (internally). Well we pulled the fuse and it wasn't shot. Then we pulled the cover off the steering column and was looking around for any signs of the problem. Couldn't find any so I used my Titan to pull the trailer over and install the gates.

Well after lunch, I went back out and was looking trying to figure it out as it had me puzzled. Come to find out there is a small latch pin that is located on the back of the column shifter that had broken off and fell into a slot not allowing it to change gears. I managed to get a picture of it with my cell phone that I'll post in the morning. Father-in-law dropped it off at the local dealer to get fixed. Guess he'll get a new cloumn shifter out of the deal. Just thought that I'd post this up if anyone else ran into the same problem.

Well I thought about that when I was looking around and saw all that Peanut Butter type lube that I remember you talking about.

Well I went back and compared the pictures in you mystery part thread, and it looks very similar to the part in my picture, but I'm thinking that the part on my father-in-laws was metal instead of plastic, but with the peanut butter lube and the teeth on it I'm thinking that's it. You stated that there was alot of play in your shifter, so I think that pretty much nails it down. I could see alot of play being the cause if this part was missing.

Maybe they changed them to metal because they were breaking? I was way past warrenty when it fell out on the carpet so I never took the truck in, but I am going into the big city Wednesday so maybe I'll stop by the parts department and see if they have one in stock to look at.

Father-in-law got the Titan back yesterday afternoon, and it ended up costing close to $600 bucks the get fixed. He said that they ended up replacing a "collar", which apparently had alot of the components on it. He filed a claim with Nissan on the issue, but I really doubt if anything will ever come of it. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
