leaf springs or air bags?

Have a 08 King Cab, LWB, 4x4. Using it for farm work, still have a heavy 2000, 3/4 ton GMC for the heavy work, but side by side that Titan dwarfs that GMC and since then I have decided that Titan ought to be able to do about what that GMC does. First got the truck because it was cheap, used with low mileage, even though I was lookin for another 3/4 ton. But I have hauled my pull behind stock trailer loaded with a GVWR of #7000 and I can see I need to beef up the hind end a little, of course, I was not using a WD hitch, would like to not have to mess with that. I went to a local frame shop and was going to order the Air lift bags but he said they only have a 2000 lb. capacity bag and it was almost $350.00 just for the bags alone. How about adding a leaf on each side? If so, where do you get the extra leaf? Can I get by without using a WD hitch. Also, anybody putting 50 bales of hay in a titan. I did, figured it at about 2000 lbs. Handled it alot better then my older F-150 and Dodge 1500, but it was still definitely a 1/2 ton. Wonder if beefy up the suspension I could do that on a regular basis with out hurting the axle and bearings.

Hi there. Hellwig makes an "add-on-leaf" to help with the overload issue. It and the airbags really only add to bed height and load stability. They do not add weight capacity.

The basic axle, transmission, brakes etc are what really determines weight capacity.

To pull the amount of weight you are talking about the weight distribution is a must if you haul any distance or on public roads.

As far as air-bag capacity, there are more than one model made for the Titan. Mine are made by Firestone "Ride-Rite" and have a maximum 5000lb capacity. Google up Firestone air-bags and shop around. Same for the Hellwig helper spring.

Thanks, that is what I am looking for. Do you have both a helper leaf and air bags or is that just uneccessary?

Howdy Hayray, you're looking at the same dilemma I ran into with our 04 Titan. The rear end, tranny and if you have a 4x4, the IFS really isn't up to the task except for really short trips with the weight you're looking at, so I moved up the a Cummins 1 ton and it sure is nice to not worry about weight now. Still love the Titan for light work but now that I own a Heavy Duty I'm truly enlightened.

We are spoiled by the power of the Titan. Despite that, it is as noted only a 1/2 ton pick-up. Like Squid pointed out, you need a Heavy Duty truck and unfortunately, the Titan isn't one.
