Towing capacity question

Well planning on renting a hydraulic dump bed trailer this weekend so that I can move fill dirt for the campsite that I've been working on close to the house. I'll also use it to haul the pea gravel that I'll be using as the top layer. My question is do you think that my truck (2004 Nissan Titan 2WD, Standard Bed, Aftermarket class III trailer hitch) would be able to pull the tandem axle trailer loaded with either fill dirt or pea gravel? Or would I be better off using the single axle dump trailer? If I remember correctly we have a 9400lb. towing capacity on the Titan correct? I guess if my wimpy little 2WD won't cut it, I could always end up borrowing my father-in-laws 04 Nissan Titan 4WD CC, Utility Bed, Big Tow.

Here's a link to the trailer(s) that I'll be renting upon some feedback from my faithful Titaneers.

How far are you planning on towing with it and how fast?

Based on the info you've provided, I say that you need the single axle trailer, and that will be stretching your Class III hitch's capacity.

Here is some info on hitches:

Trailer Hitch Classes Defined and Explained

In this case it isn't the Titan which is the limiting factor, it is the hitch which was never designed to handle that amount of weight.

Going up grades and the like will also have to be factored in as your brakes will take a beating as you approach max loads.

I wish you luck and use caution so you can enjoy that camping site.

Well maybe planning on hauling it 13 miles to get the pea gravel. Wouldn't want to get over 50 mph with a full load. And as far as the fill dirt, I'm getting it from a pile row in the pasture next to my house, so I don't see going over 5 mph there.

Do the big tow package Titans come with a class IV hitch? If this is the case, I'll just use the father-in-laws to pull when loaded. Thanks for the insight.

Yes, the Big Tow is a Class IV. That's the only way they can specify a 940lb. tongue weight as well as a 9400 max tow capacity. As seen on the chart I linked to, that is near the max of a class IV hitch.

I think your idea to borrow your relative's truck is the best move. As much as we love our Titans, they are still just a 1/2 ton truck.

Well I went down early this morning in the father-in-law's truck and picked up the 4 cu. yard Tandem Axlel hydraulic dump trailer and filled it with 2 loads of 6500 lbs. of pea gravel. (MADE THIS IN 2 TRIPS, NOT 1)The Titan preformed flawlessly. Except for a little wheel slippage climbing the incline on the way back to the house on the gravel road. I figured out today too, why some folks hate VDC. I do not have this feature in my Titan beings it is a 2wd. Went to pull the incline on the first laod and the wheel slipped and VDC kicked in. I thought that I had torn up something in the drivetrain. Then I realized VDC was on, flipped it off and away we went. Meant to post some pics, but kinda hard when you don't have any charged batteries in the digital camera. Thanks for all the input and advice. I'm glad to have gotten this job done. More so on the safe side. Thanks again!

This job is the prime example of why I bought the 1 ton rather then another 1/2 ton or even a 3/4 ton. If it can be hitched up I can tow it with no worries which wasn't the case with the 04 even though it did it, there was a lot of times I was scared.
