More Payload, how???

Got a question for you on the 08's and payload. The payload was increased by 500 lbs from the previous Titan's but the towing capacity didn't change. How was this done? As far as I can tell the tranny is the same, same springs, shocks weight of the truck (except for the long bed)? Is it because they increased the brake size for better stopping or or??? How was this done?

Horsepower, Torque, Brake size, and there is speculation that the rear end has been beefed up. I personally always thought the payload rating was low considering how much I've hauled around in mine.

Quite often, the engineers keep some reserve. For many years, American Automakers were accused of understating HP for insurance purposes.

This could be a case of "we know its good for "X" amount of weight, but until we build up some firm data, we'll only rate it for "X - 500lbs." Then through the miracle of advertising it gets boosted up 500 lbs to match the competition.

Shifty had heard that it was changed for 08 and I was suppose to go take pics to see if it is physically different. I've not seen anything in writing stating that the rear end is different so it's just a rumor right now.

I have read, in a different obviously inferior forum that shall remain nameless, that some people have actually put 2000# in the back of their 04 and 05 models, and the suspension held up just fine. I sorta agree with Red. I think they rated the truck payload a little light at first to see how the then current set up would work out. (Known capability, less rating = fewer warranty claims).
Not to be a wet blanket, but the service manager at my local Nissan dealer told me the horse power/torque gains in the engine were due to a different way of rating, as mandated by the gov., not to any major changes in the engine. Is it true? Don't know.......

I think the info from the service manager is out of date. A number of years ago SAE standards were changed and the creative wiggle room was removed. Now days there are exacting tests that have to be used. You can be sure that OEMs buy the other brand and run the tests on them to see if they are honest.

Could very well be..... Like I said.... is it true?... Don't know
Except for bragging rights, the small differences in output wouldn't seem to matter.
