Drive train fluids - drain or flush?

I have noticed that you guys are just draining the rear ends, diffs, trans, transferr case - dealer tells me they are flushing all these systems and wow - can't believe the prices they want. What is wrong with just draining the systems like the old days? My thinking is that if you have a lot of metal shavings through out the system and need a flush you would have a major problem anyways, correct? All my other vehicles such as pick ups and tractors that I own I just drain the system - what are your thoughts?

I think regular services by draining are sufficient. If you really wanted to clean up your oil, drain, fill with inexpensive oil, change filter. Drive around for an hour or so. Come home, drain, put in new filter, fill with quality oil. A lot cheaper than a flush.

For the auto transmission, I'd let the dealer do a drain and fill. There are some different fill procedures other than just dropping the pan and pouring the oil down the filler tube.

For the differential, drain, swab out all the gunk you can reach and refill with proper synthetic oil.

Your mileage may vary of course, but I think many of the "flushes" are designed to leave the dealer flush with cash and you feeling flushed down the drain.

Hey Red, thanks. Your last statement keeps making me laugh, you must be a part time comedian also.

Thanks,
