Spark Plug change this weekend

Well I decided it's time to change the plugs. Hopefully with the change, I'll see an increase in MPG's and maybe a small gain the the performance sector. I decided to go with the E3.68 plug. This is the direct replacement for the OEM NGK plugs. Been hearing alot of chatter about it on the Power Block that Spike TV air on Saturdays and Sundays and other truck sites that I frequent. Picked them up at my local O'Reilly Auto Part store for $5.99 ea. I'm figuring that I'm getting in the mid to high 12 mpg range currently. I'll track my fuel mileage and see if it gets better after the install and post my findings on here. Wish me luck! May have to get the kid out there to get the back plugs out. My big "Man Hands" might make that a little difficult. Anyone offer any tips or pointers other than the obvious? (Anti Seize on the threads, etc......)

Sounds like a fun weekend! Hope it goes better for you than it always does for me. A one hour job always takes 3 trips to the parts store, and enough skinned knuckles to share with the neighbors. Not to mention the "creative language" I always end up using..........

One ole mechanic once said: "Take a bucket and half fill it with used motor oil. The blacker the better. Add some gas and used brake fluid. Stir it well. Pour in some dirt, metal filings and the like. Soak your hands in it for 20 minutes. Take a file and scrape it across your knuckles a few times, until it really smarts. Now he said, "You've got that out of the way so you can get down to mechanicin' for serious without distractions!""

Well I got started at about 5:30 yesterday afternoon, and managed to finish up around 6:30pm, and that was after an interuption from a passing shower. Not all that bad of a job. I would look forward to doing it again, but I wouldn't dread it. All my plugs were pretty well charred. And it seemed like the plugs in the front of the cylinder head had some oil residue on them and the ones close to the rear of the engine were really dry and somewhat crusty. I am now referring to the plug on the passenger side closest to the firewall as "Booger" Cause that's what it is to get in and out. I also cleaned to PCV valves which were gummed up. They had a little rattle, but not much. A few quick brusts of LPS cleaner and then a couple quick shots of compressed air and I was rattling like a 10ft. rattlesnake. Before installing the new E3 plugs, I gave the threads a light coating of anti-seize to prevent them from galling up on the next change. All in all, I give this project a 3.5 out of 5 stars on the difficulty level. Any regular Joe with a little mechanical skills should be able to do this plug change. Attached are pics of the OEM NGK plugs after 114,kkk miles. Pretty rough.

Back in the ole days of carbs and points, that's how the plugs would look after 8K to 10Kmiles.

My first vehicle was a 1981 Jeep CJ-5 with the 258 in-line six and it fouled out plugs like crazy. I put in a set of Spitfire plugs that were supposed to fire in oil and etc.... They worked like a champ for about 2 weeks and back to old fouled out performance.

The real culprit was the ignition system. I had a '71 Datsun 510. Dual points, anemic coil. When I installed a CDI Capacitive Discharge Ignition.

It boosted the spark up to a very high voltage at a low amperage. This ended my burned points problem and then they lasted 20K miles plus. Before if I got 8K miles I was overjoyed.

I like it much better now.

Those look great! It's still hard for me to believe we can go over 100,000 miles on a set of spark plugs now adays....................Before the Titan i had a Frontier and at 50,000 miles I changed the plugs for no other reason then I couldn't believe you could go 50,000 miles on a set of spark plugs.
