Mig Welder advice

I want a Mig welder that can handle both welding exhaust, and welding on things like traction bars.
I dont know how thick that is.
How many amps would that take?
Should I get a flux core or gas or no gas?

Im wanting to brush up on my welding skills.......or learn how... so I can start doing things that I want without having someone else do it.

Gas is your best bet.... but get a machine that can do both. I've tried doing a little flux core welding, and it's a real PITA.

Take a look at the Miller site to see how big a machine you might need...

Miller - MIG Welders, GMAW Wire Welding Equipment

My welding instructor said "You get what you pay for in welding machines, harbor freight is junk"

If you have a 220 line where you are doing the work, that's best... a 110 machine will dim all the lights in the house when it cycles.

A larger machine will have a better cycle time too...

I use a Miller 250X in my ATV/Motorcycle shop. I change the gage of wire for light or heavy duty steel welding. For gas I use what they call "Steel Mix". I also have the gas and spool gun setup for welding aluminum. It has worked well for me.

Tool Test: Lincoln Welder - Popular Mechanics

I have a lincoln weldpak 100 and it has done everything I've asked of it including welding on frames. 220 is great for a designated area but you just can't beat the portability of these 110 welders when it comes to taking it to a friends house or if you move a lot because you seldom find 220VAC in garages. I've also heard great things about the Hobart welders.

If your welding site isn't too far from the laundry room and you have an electric dryer, you can do as I did and make a jumper from a dryer pig-tail and a 220v outlet installed in a steel outlet box. Of course if your welder or other 220v machine draws more amps than the dryer is set up to handle, then this is not a safe solution.
