Garage Floor Coating

Last night I had some extra time during my nightly drive so I stopped by Lowe's and picked up some Rustoleum Epoxy Shield Garage Floor coating for $62. I've always wanted to do this since the first time I saw it on Shade Tree Mechanic and since I'm almost done with the concrete side of the barn this would be a perfect time to apply it.

It's Water-based epoxy so there isn't a strong odor and clean up will be a snap and the Kit includes a concentrated surface cleaner so no muriatic acid etching will be needed and no primer and 1 box does 250 sq ft.
The kit includes 2-part epoxy floor system, Concentrated cleaner, Decorative chips, Stir stick, and a kick azz DVD that shows you how pretty your floor will be.

Here's a video about it http://webapps.easy2.com/cm/flash/rs...ge_id=35693568 and I've also included the PDF instructions for your viewing pleasure.

So has anyone ever applied any type of floor coating before or know anything about this stuff? I won't be able to apply it probably until I get my heating and cooling system installed due the temp here being below 60 F.

Take it back quick. I worked for two days to put the crappy product down. Go to Sherwim WIlliams and ask for their paint on version. MUCH HAPPIER.....

the crap from the big box stores is so watery and thin it comes right up when anything drags across it. I was very not happy when a 4" section peeled up like paper.

I bought a can of the generic home depot garage floor stuff. It's an epoxy. I have it on my shed floor. No problems just yet with it.

I've heard good things about the stuff from the paint stores too...

Hmmmmm, wish you wouldn't have said that. Was this an old oily floor by chance? Hope,Hope,Hope, because the floor I'm putting it on hasn't seen any sort of petroleum products on it just lots of dirt so I've pressure washed it once and was going to wash it one more time just for the heck of it.

Guess I need to check into this Sherwin Williams product before I get all carried away and suffer major disappointment. Thanks.

I used the cleaner and scrubbed that floor enough to eat off of it. I applied it slow and pretty just like the directions showed. Two days of cure time for half the garage, then repeat on other side. VERY FRUSTRATED. Friend who is manager at S/W giggled at me and gave me the code to the 5gallon can of "End All" that I put down. I wish I had it still so I could give it to you. Much easier. Power wash, Mask off, Paint, SMILE

I used this paint from Sherwin Williams. This is not made by Sherwin Williams,
they said they don't make an equivalent product. This is probably a different product than what Devildawg used. I am very happy with the results. When I bought it it was 25% off, or about $23 gallon.
I did use muriatic acid, and since my floor was new it was clean. I was going to use what Squid bought, but I was told I would not be happy. Plus the price was much higher.
The can said that it covers 250sq.ft, but I got more coverage than what was stated. I ended up using 3 coats, for a total of 9 gallons on 1800 sq. ft., so it cost me about $250 including the acid and the shark grip.
I have 5 gallons left over for other projects.

Hi Squid,
Recently I used this product http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp...t_id=169&SBL=2 to finish a 40 year old floor in my repair shop. I first used a heavy duty degreaser and scrubbing brushes to thouroughly clean the floor of dirt and petroleum. After drying I acid washed it as recommended to open up the pores and clean. It was allowed to dry completly. You need to be very careful of moisture in the concrete. Moisture will bubble/lift your coating. If you are unsure of the amount of moisture in the floor cover an area with plastic sheeting taped down on the edges for a day or so. If your floor sweats now as is you may not want to coat it. Application is easy-pour out the material and pull it tight with a wide squeegee, then roll one direction only with a short nap pheniloc roller. I did 400sqft in a short time and it came out very nice. However....after living with it everyday for the last 6 months it has pluses and minuses. It cleans up from spills nicely; oils, grease, dirt, acid, water, brake fluid do nothing to it. It can be very slippery(I didnt use grit because its hard on the hands and knees). Cutting and welding sparks are not nice to it. Dropping metal on it will bruise and chip it. I have used "Porch Paint" before and it is not worth the time it takes to apply it.

I used 2' square industrial office floor tiles on my garage floor ..... I'm amazed at the abuse they take without any major cuts, dents or scratches .... and everything wipes up easily ..... my first house had an epoxy floor paint on the garage floor and it was good, but I believe that the tiles are better.
