UPS Hydraulic Hybrid

This is interesting and I have to admit that I'm just totally blown away with all the different Green machines I keep reading about even if they are Brown every now and then.

Here's some detailed info about this Hybrid.

I remember a thread on the announcement of the technology, but this is the first I've seen that a proto-type is on the road. Great engineering.

In the missile launching system I worked on, we used many forms of hydraulic drive and pressure accumulators. All the mechanical motions on the launcher were electric motor driving a hydraulic pump and then a hydraulic motor at the driven end. The speed or rotation and direction of rotation were controlled by a swash plate on the pump, which was a 9 piston variable displacement unit. Except for the rare failure of the accumulator's nitrogen filled bladder, the systems were bulletproof.

I think using a delivery company to test is the best way to go. Imagine all the miles they rack up in a month let alone a year. (What can Brown do for you?)

I think a cab company, like in a major city would be a great test also.

we've got several trucks with over 500,000 miles. even on some routes, i log well over 150 miles in a day, 5 days a week, all the while subjecting the trucks through the daily rigors of "Days of Thunder"-like road racing. (rental car scene)

It's all about cost savings. It shouldn't be surprising at all from the company that found a way to save money by not painting the roof of the trucks.

Not painting the roof allowed them to use a translucent panel taking advantage of the available sunlight for interior illumination. Smart.

our roofs are made of fiberglass and are white, which as you stated, allows for sunlight. now all we need is some air conditioning for the trucks and then we're talking!
