I think because it adds oxygen at combustion time rather than trying to shovel more fuel into the intake.

Here are a couple of the threads I was able to locate. I used to post on Titan Spot as well, but no longer have access there.
Generally the "experts" said there would be too much lag with a remote turbo, also that there wouldn't be enough "heat" available as needed. Heat is the true power provider in the turbo system.

Lag is being engineered out and Squires System has good engineering behind it and is not really intended as a race system. Just a system that pumps in extra HP as needed for normal sporty driving, towing, etc.

If I find any more, I'll post them. Also there was an interesting test done about a year ago that provided significant HP/TQ increase to a GM V6. I don't remember the Magazine now, but think it was Truck Trend.
