Brake Technology

Brakes are often a topic on here. I was watching the Malaysian Grand Prix this morning and one astounding bit of info concerned the brakes. Brembo announced that at one particular corner, deemed to be the most severe braking corner required the car needs to slow down by 214 KM/HR in 3 seconds. The driver experiences 4.0 Gees of deceleration and it takes 126 Kg of pressure on the brake pedal.

These brakes were all carbon-carbon and provide tremendous capabilities.

4 G's? wow .... that's "suck your eyeballs outta your head" stopping capability....and I always thought that brakes were the most over rated design feature on any of my vehicles .... I mean, heck .... if everybody else has brakes, then what do I need mine for?

Actually, Mr. B, brakes are useless in your case. Due to the path of hate and destruction in your wake, the most important control in your truck would obviously be the gas pedal

Yeah, 4G load also includes the side loading from going around the curve, as they continue the braking effort into the curve. F1 only uses 13" diameter wheels, so you know the brakes can't be much over 8" to 10" in diameter. And still achieve that amount of stopping force.

What amazes me is not the fact they can stop like that, its the fact that they do it continually throughout a race.

The physical conditioning of the drivers is exceptional. They are really athletes, not just drivers.
