Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) Torque Sensing

I've been researching the max Torque handeling ability of our RE5R05A Transmission as asked by the old Coot which has led me to Torque management systems which has brought me to this nifty document about SAW torque sensing.

Makes me wonder if in fact we might be approaching a time when transmissions will actually be controlling the output of the engine, what do you think?

I thought the engine and transmission were talking back and forth using current electronics?

Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the worry of tranny failure the very reason that most pickup trucks use the ECM to control initial power to the transmission? Not all the power is delivered to the drive train at once. Our Titan being the notable exception.......

Ol'Coot, I think you are right and wrong. Yes, they do control initial power but I think the reason might be more aimed at the lack of weight in back and not wanting to spin the wheels at the slightest press of the accelerator. Also, I do think the initial HP is controlled. Otherwise, why are some folks doing the brake pedal mod to allow full power on take-off?

Hmmm.... I never thought of that. I had figured that it was as I stated above, a method to save the tranny during initial acceleration. Learn something new every day!
