P0455 code, not starting

My dad's 04 Titan truck won't start, she'll crank over, there's fuel as you can smell it, haven't checked for spark yet but I think it's there as it almost caught once.

There was a CEL on the car which showed a P0455 code. Looked it up and did the recommended tightening of the gas cap. Looks like there is a Nissan TSB out for this code to replace the vent control valve so I might try that later on.

I'm going to give it a tune up as I think she needs it (69K miles) and replace the spark plugs to see if that will start the car but in the meanwhile I was wondering if this emissions code could be the cause of the truck not starting? Emissions problems usually don't hamper a car from starting but I figured I'd check.

Thank you in advance!

-Chee

There seems to be a TSB for 04-05 models not starting also TSB # 04131B. Anybody have any more information on this?

Well, if it is an emissions code, they have longer warranties and might be fixable by the dealer at low or no cost.

Didn't Matt have that problem with his 04 Titan a year or two ago?

I can't remember exactly what code mine pulled but it was an emissions code I think. Something about the purge canister vent valve. If I remember right that was back in the nissantitanforum.org days. And I think that site went under. I'm trying to rememeber what the code was and I think it was a P2011 or something close to that. I'll look in the glove box tomorrow and report back if I can remember.

Well I was way off on the code reading. Managed to finally wade (we've had over 10" of rain in the past few days) out to the truck this morning and check for the receipt and found it. The code that was pulled was a P1446 Auxiliary Emissions code. Dug a little deeper and found my invoice from the dealership. They replaced my Purge Valve which is located on top of the gas tank if I remember correctly. Here's what the invoice stated:

00 Replace Purge Valve $112.50 $112.50 (Labor Amount)
607 CN 1.50
1 14935-AM500 Valve Assy $88.08 $88.08 (Parts Amount)
*********************************************
Shop Materials/Haz. Waste--------------------$5.63
Total Charges -------------------------------$206.21
Sales Tax ------------------------------------$7.93
Please Pay This Amount ----------------------$214.14

This fixed the problem for a couple of days, and the light came back on, and went to Auto Zone and had it scanned again, pulled the same code. Took it back to dealership and they stated that the next fix would be to replace the Charcoal Evaporative Canister, and the service manager said that would cost in the $300 to $600 for the parts and the labor rate would be quite high beings that there would be several parts to remove in order to get to this evaporative canister. I asked would there be any drawbacks to not having this service done, and he said mechanically no, but if I had any future problems with SEL (service engine light) codes that they would be masked by the P1446 code and any other codes would no be able to be read. I figured the heck with it, run it till it blows up, and that was 2 years and 50k miles ago on October the 30th of 2008. I've not had any problems other than my gas mileage really starting to suck here as of late. Don't know if this P1446 code is related or not. If I keep my foot out of it, the Tank gets decent mileage in the 14 to 15 MPG range. I was previously getting close to 18 - 20 MPG before this issue. Sorry to be long winded, but I had taken notes on the back of the invoice and figured I'd post all the info that I had.

I found another Titan needed one that pulled the same PO455 code:

"The dealer replaced the valve and filter line then installed a valve assembly kit for the unit.
I asked why the need for the assembly unit and the service manager said it is for a design flaw that Nissan did not realize it was needed.
The evap valve, in time, gets dirt and grit into it due to location in the rear. The service manager said this is common for Titans having 70-80K miles to have this problem.
My costs were over $350.00 for this little problem. "

Guess I'll check it out when I'm under me Titan this weekend.
