Project Lincoln

I had this on TS but I wanted to bring it here. Im more or less cutting and pasting and updating info.
Well, I saw this thing a few years ago and wanted it really bad.
I always wanted a hooptie to fix up and turn into a pimped out
beach cruiser. Its a 1967 Lincoln Continental with suicide doors
and loaded! 462 cubic inch V-8!
The guy that had it owned a used car place and he bought it for
3700 bucks at an auction. At the time it had one owner and it
was garage kept. It rand really good too. It has 90,000 miles on it.
All the black leather is still good too. Its got power windows,
power locks and power seats!

Well, he had his mechanic try to give it a tune up and the mechanic
tried to hold the throttle above idle with a screw driver and walked
away from it. It ended up winding out and bent a few push rods before
he could get it shut down. Needless to say that mechanic got fired.
He ended up shutting the used car place down after that too.
It has been sitting outside for a few years now collecting dust.
He had it sold for 5,000 bucks once but the check bounced so
he still had it.

I went and asked him about it yesterday. I asked him if he still wanted
to get rid of it. He said........yeah. Yeah I do.
If you get it out of here tomorrow, you can have it.

DOUBLE TAKE!!!
If you get it out of here tomorrow, you can have it.
Yeah! I thought the same thing!
I didnt know what to say at first.
The next thing I said was I'll be there in the morning!
Well, it took a little longer than I thought to get a trailer but I got one
and went and loaded it up.
This trailer is 7 foot wide! I had about 4 inches or less on either side of
the car between the rails of the trailer.
This car is HUGE!

My truck was huffin on this one. It was about 60 miles away from my parents house. The springs were squished and the axle was about
3 inches from the bump stops!
Largest load I've ever pulled in this truck.

The spots you see are not rust. Its just alot of dirt. There is only one dent in it and its in the front above the grill.

The headliner and interior is in really good shape.
I wont have to worry about the inside right away and I can go ahead and get it painted up nice after i get it mechanically sound and reliable.

It has a cigarette lighter and ashtray in every door.

This is the motor when I got it. It is missing the valve covers and breather.

I didnt want to just make it run. I wanted it to be reliable and not leak. I went ahead and pulled all of this out so I could replace the timing gears and timing chain.
It would tuen over by key so I needed to get to the crank as well.

Here, I was a littl elet down that I couldnt turn it by hand either. Not even with a break over bar.
I pulled the plugs and poured oil/diesel in the cylinders to make it free up.
No luck!
I was getting scared. But, it was a 7.6 liter monster.

Anyways, heres what I did.
I had all the spark plugs pulled out already so I could turn the motor by hand.
It would not move by hand even though I soaked the cylinders for a day.
So I got one of the spark plugs and broke all the porcelyn and crap out of the
middle of it so that it was just a hollow plug.
Then I got an air chuck....the kind you connect the air hose to to use air tools.
I soldered the chuck to the hollow spark plug. Then found out which cylinders
piston was about half way down so that when I screwed the "airplug" in it and
connected the air hose to it, I would have 90 PSI pushing down on that cylinder.
That alone was enough to break it loose to where I could turn it by the crank with
a break over bar. I turned it over quite a few times to get it nice and relubed.

Here I was checking for the right piston to use.

This is the AIRPLUG installed.
Im so smart.

New Gasket sets, cam and crank gears, timing chain, hoses, pushrods......

HUGE TRUNK!
Sorry for the crappy picture.

Well, I did some work on the boat today and got it running.
The bad thing is that there are a few bent valves. I didnt put everything back on the engine to start it. I had a feeling that I would put everything on there and start it up and something else be wrong with it just to tear it apart again.
I started it with the valve covers off and just the timing chain cover on.
ran it a couple of seconds before we shut it off.
It ran pretty good considering it was only firing on 5 cylinders.
It was pinging like a mofo because of the bent valves.
You could see that the second rocker arm from the left is not moving and by that time, the push rods were already bent. No prb on the rods. I got a few extra.

I was going to get the heads rebuilt but I found a dude in SO CAL that had some already rebuilt and had valve covers and a breather.
I got all of it for 330 bucks shipped.
Hell yeah!

Ok. SInce Im not home to work on this, I let my brother take over the project. Well, hes not gonna work on it but he is taking the entire car to a mechanic that is building a couple engines for my brother.
He is going to put all the new parts on it and get it in running condition. I really want to put upgraded brakes on it as well but that would cost a real fortune. I might replace all the original brake stuff if it needs it. I found a Lincoln parts dealer in Cali. and in Florida.
I bet its gonna take a couple thousand to get it on the road.
After that, Paint and wheels.
Pimpmobile.

I found some specs for this thing.
Here it is.
221 inches long.
80 inches wide.
5,256 lbs
340 hp and 485 lb.-ft torque

Here is a brochure on it.
http://www.tocmp.com/brochures/Linco...7/Continental/
Pretty amazing features.
speed actuated door locks.
Auto dimming headlights.

The Titan is 224 inches long
78 inches wide
5,097 lbs

Well, I was doing it at my parents house but
Now since Im in Iraq, I cant.
My brother will get the rest done for me at his mechanics.
Hopefully when I go on R&R it will be running so I can drive it a little bit.
I will get the paint job and stuff when I return home in 2008!

I hope this rush to get it running is just a first step. This car and engine is worthy of a full rebuild. Pull the engine, total tear down, new bearings, boil out the block, and quality parts on rebuild.

You do that and it will last for a long long time.

I dont have all day.
If someone doesn't fix them by the time I get up I will.

By the way that is sweet! I'm a sucker for suicide doors.
