It got me wondering when it would pay for me to buy a little gas miser, park it in the big city and just drive my truck back and forth from it and here's what I came up with. (Due to driving at night out here in the country. Deer, Cows and Horses mandate me driving a large vehicle for the sake of my life.)

33 gallons of Diesel at $7.80 Gallon = $257 a week- $1028 a month

Since I figure I can find a little car that will double the MPG of my truck with no problem I then came up with this.

16.5 Gallons of gas at $7 a Gallon = $115.5 a week - $462 a month for fuel.

To recap,
Truck $1028 a month
Itty Bitty car $462 a month

Not a pretty sight huh?
Defiantly food for thought. Sad but true.

I average 15 mpg doing mostly highway miles. Currently I am spending $80 a week on gas. Hopefully the new addition to my driveway will pay for itself. I purchased a used Mazda Protege. Reports I can find suggest 31 mpg highway. Double the mileage equals half the fuel cost or a budget of $160 a month. The car will cost me $105 for a monthly payment and an additional $40 for insurance. Other incidental expenses such as registration and inspection are low enough I am not even going to work them in to the equation. The only gamble here is that maintenance costs will be low. The Protege has a good track record in that area. I do not expect this, as a second car, to make me money but I feel better about spending it this way. The hidden savings will be the reduced miles I put on my Titan. This should help to preserve some of it's ever shrinking resale value and prolonging it's service life. The Titan will become more of a recreational vehicle for me. A reward on the weekends for a long hard week of commuting to work in a small car.

of all the stories you hear about people trading in the titan for a smaller car or simply buying a smaller car to fill up with less, that one ^^ might be one of the better ones, you're not throwing money away like a majority of other panicked titan drivers do when switching to smaller cars

The right approach. The monthly payment for car and insurance are pretty fixed. The price of a gallon of gas is not. As it rises, your savings in gas costs will also imcrease.

You might talk with your insurance company. When you remove your truck as a daily driver to work, your rates usually come down as your risk for an accident is also decreased.

I wish I had found that to be the case. I listed the Protege as my primary vehicle with the Titan relegated to a "pleasure" role. I didn't see much of a drop in the rates for the Titan. I went to a couple other sites as well as a local agent to get some quotes. They all were in line with what I am paying now so I am probably not getting ripped off. I just hoped for better.

Sorry to hear that. My personal experience has been that miles driven daily affected the cost of insurance. Perhaps, if I were to go with another company I'd see different results.
