Squids Shop Blog

With the Queens house came a 40' by 22' old barn full of junk and since the couple I bought it from were elderly I said "don't worry about the junk I'll take care of it", big mistake. For 7 years I've avoided this barn like the plague but the time has come that I finally have to get dirty.

One of the many things I do is woodworking. First it started as just a necessity in order to restore the Queens Victorian but as I did it more I found that I had a knack for it and I really liked doing it so over the years I've acquired more and more tools that I'm now to the point that my 2 car garage is stuffed.

Back to the barn.

After a lot of looking and pricing I decided that the old barn was really in pretty good shape and when I analyzed my needs would work great with just a little bit of sweat. One side has a 22' X 18' concrete floor so I'll put in a garage Door where you see the window now and that will be where I will store the tractor, Tillers, Riding Lawnmower etc, until I'm done with the Queens house. In January I'm having central heat and air put in so when I'm no longer shackled to the Queens mansion I'll use that side for my other passion restoring old vehicles.

I'm going to roof and side 3 of the 4 sides with what's called Ondura sheeting for less than $2,500 which I ordered from Lowe's Friday night while out on my drive. I need to install a floor on the 22' X 22' side and I'll run the wiring under the floor for my table saw, planer and lathe since they sit out away from walls. I have to replace the breaker box, all the wiring, lights and switches. Where you see the double doors on the right side of the barn will be a sliding glass door. I'm going to leave the double doors to keep out prying eyes. The center door will be removed and the hole framed and like I mentioned before the window on the left will be removed for a garage door. As for windows I'm planning on two on the back side and one on the north side.

I'm going to do everything except the Central Air myself so I think my Titan and I have our work cut out for us this winter.

What about a raised wood floor. That way all power and Vacuum ducting could be below deck and out of the way. Future additions could be added with less problems that way and not have all sorts of pipes and counduit hanging from the ceiling.

You are for sure right that the power needs attending to. Looks like a shock just waiting to happen.

Nice project. I'm sure you will enjoy making a real Man-Cave to be proud of.

I'm not a very big fan of riding mowers, ......but that Kabota is just dripping with raw sexuality ...... just give me 30 minutes alone with it.

Better than a raised floor, do it like they would do a server room, with regular raised flooring. Something like this? http://www.accessfloorsystems.com/access/sys/

You would only need like what 6, 7" at most? You could run all your power and vac needs below the floor, and have the added benefit of having an exteremly level floor after it's all installed.

Don't forget to leave space for the kegerator, big screen tv, and hot tub.

Go Squid! I love projects like yours! The electrical service looks a little scary, kind of like an amateur did it. But certainly do-able. Actually, I'm a little jealous....wished I had a place like that to retreat to. That way Mrs Coot couldn't engage me in indepth conversations on my personality deficiencies.

Oct 17 2006

After 2 days of mental preparation I finally got up the nerve to start cleaning out the barn. I threw away 3 bags of solidified cement, two truckloads of old dilapidated wood (that I put on the burn pile) and collected 8 bags of everything from cans of bolts and nails to rope, dead decayed rats,
(Hey that rat poison does work.) etc, etc.

Still doesn't look like much but tomorrow I will have the cement side cleared out so the tillers and tractor can be parked over there out of the way.
