Since I didn't want to clean in the barn today (It's icky) I decided to swap out the hot water heater that I've had sitting around for a couple of years. While at Lowe's I picked up a new 100 amp load center, 250' of 12 gauge wire (Code states 14 gauge for residential but I prefer 12 gauge.) and a conduit bender.

Tomorrow I guess it's back to cleaning.

As for the burn pile I'm not done yet.

I'm in the same boat as you Squishy.. if you run 14, then you can't run a circuit any larger than 15amps... if you run 12, you can do 20 or 15.. for the minimal wire upcharge, it's worth it. Having 20amp ciruits available for shop tools is a requirement in my book.

I'm hoping the only place you intend on running conduit is the floor, right?

Yup, and to the lights. I'm keeping an open overhead so I'll conduit to them just so I don't get a board hung up in a wire.

They were running that wire on sale at Home Depot this week. I forget what exactly the cost was.... I briefly considered purchasing a 250' roll, but I think that I'm done with most of the wiring I'm planning to do for the time being.

Mmmm... Barn Project...

Keep the pics comin' Squidster. I wouldn't say your project pics are better than looking at pr0n, but they're nice to stare at in the post-pull period while the clown is cooling off.

Squid, I really like the picture of the rafters. I am curious if you know what type of wood was used?
Also, have you noticed how much romex has increased in price? Just a year ago I could buy 250' of #12 for $15-20, now I am paying $80.I just payed $150 for 250' of #10 romex.I use #10 to make long extension cords for the generator.
I am in the process of putting a 200 amp service in my new shop. I have a 200' run and it requires 3/0 copper or 250 RCM if I use aluminum. I am afraid to even ask what the 3/0 copper costs, so I will go with the aluminum. This will be direct burial.
Are you going to get a separate meter or are you going run 100 amps off your homes service panel? If you are going with a separate meter, I hope you county building department and local power company is more user friendly than mine. I had to go to our County Board of Supervisors and have them lean on the Building Department in order to get my permit.
100 amps wold not give me enough power to run my shop. Most of my equipment welders, air compressors, planer etc. are 240v.

If the rafters are the same wood as the Queens house is framed out of it's black Walnut. It grows wild on the land here. When I start working up there I'll take a better pic.
As for the Service entrance I'm lucking out there because it already exists for the barn so all I'm doing is updating the breaker panel. The REC here is a joke the C stands for cooperative which means we have to cooperate with them to get any thing done. Azzholes!

I was going to put in a 200 Amp panel but after thinking about it I only have 5 220V tools and only 2 of those are ever ran at the same time so I'm good to go for now. In the future i may upgrade to more industrial quality tools and then I'll just have them bring in true 3 phase. (Gawd Forbide)

I thought the rafters etc. looked like some sort of hardwood, but I would never have guessed walnut!
I guess people used the wood that was available at the time. People are amazed at our old buildings that are completely of redwood, which would cost you a fortune if you did it today.
I would give some serious thought to replacing some of the rafters etc., and using the walnut for furniture, cabinets, gun stocks and the like.
