Diesel in the works for Titan

This is posted over at pickuptrucks.com. It is reported there that Cummins and the Feds are currently working to develop a 2.8 liter 4 cylinder engine for the Titan. According to the article, the combined fuel economy will be 28 mpg and the unit will have 350 ft lbs or torque

Squid, maybe you were right to wait for awhile to get another truck!

Rumors, Rumors. We've been hearing Titan related rumors for years. Good if they come true, but nothing in iron/aluminum yet.

I'm waiting for metal under the hood that is actually for sale. Otherwise, Nissan is just playing the old Microsoft Vaporware ploy.

All kidding aside, that would be good news if it comes to pass.

I'm no expert but, a 4 cyl diesel with 350 ft/lbs of torque seems a little small, doesn't it ??

Diesels generally aren't horsepower monsters. They are, however, torque monsters. The current Titan V8 offers 379-400 lb/ft of torque.

It would make the Titan more of a work horse and less of a sprinter for stop-light duty. The estimated 28mpg would nearly double the current rating of the V8 as well.

As far as size is concerned, smaller engine also means less weight which would contribute to payload and increased fuel economy.

Modern diesels have come a long way in drivability. Quieter, more fuel efficient, etc. Of course per gallon costs of diesel are higher than gasoline, but then it will still be cheaper to run over the same distance.

A combined 28 mpg rating would theoretically mean a highway rating of somewhere over 30 mpg, of course that would be empty. As Red said, even loaded the fuel economy would be ~50-60% better than out gas units now, with no loss in load and towing capability

I know about the diesel being a torque monster. When I said small I was referring to the 350 ft/lbs or torque. I mean, you get a 4 cyl diesel with great mpg but, it sounds like a diesel motor for someone that simply wants bragging rights, "Yeah, I got a diesel..." Just sounds under powered...IMO

What kinda torque does the Cummins, PowerStroke, & others make ?? I know those are 6 cyl & 8 cyl. << Thats my point.

How big are the diesels they put in some of the cars ?? 1.8 - 2.0 liter or so ?

Off hand I don't know how much torque the large cummins diesels produce. Squid would know as he has one in his Dodge 1T.

Still, as far as efficiency goes, the 2.8L mentioned above would be adequate for most uses.

I think we have become too accustomed to having everything oversize for what we really need. Oversize breeds excess consumption which is $$ going out the tail pipe and not on the road.

Day to day, I expect I never exceed 3K rpm. Never need to go that fast so the 5.6L engine is way overkill for my real needs. I admit its nice having extra ponies under the hood when I really want to get-up-and-go!

The new high performance Cummins, Power Stroke and Duramax diesels are in the 800 ft lbs range, with HP in the mid to upper 300s, I think. But we have to remember that the Titan is a 1/2 ton truck with frame and pieces to match, so the 350 torque is ~ the same as the gas engine. Based on that my SWAG would say that towing and toting would be the same, but acceleration will be a little more, er, shall we say, leisurely.
Not to be too self righteous, I like the ponies in our present engine just fine....... Especially when some inbred son @f a %#$C* tries to cut me off when I am trying to merge on the freeway.
