Chrysler and Nissan Ink Deal

But not the deal that us Cummin/Titan lovin owners had hoped for.

Automotive News
January 11, 2008 - 12:01 am ET
DETROIT -- Chrysler LLC and Nissan Motor Co. inked a deal today for Nissan to supply Chrysler with a small car based on the Nissan Versasedan to be sold in South America in 2009.
" This kind of tactical partnership allows us to maximize product offerings yet minimize costly investments such as new plant infrastructure, tooling and R&D," Chrysler Vice Chairman Tom LaSorda said in a prepared statement. " This partnership will give Chrysler nearly immediate access to vehicle segments in which we do not currently compete."
Under the plan, Nissan will supply about 20,000 vehicles a year from its plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico. That facility currently produces a 1.8-liter Versa for the United States.
The car is badged the Tiida in Mexico and elsewhere overseas.
The agreement is smaller than some had originally speculated. It will cover only one model, and does not address Nissan's gap in pickup trucks. Chrysler's strength in SUVs and pickups was seen as an area where Nissan might tap that company's expertise.
" It's just a one-shot OEM," said the person familiar with the issue. " But the lines of communication will remain open for the possibility of future talks or exchanges."
Cooperation on the Versa would be the second major exchange between the companies. Nissan already supplies Chrysler with continuously variable transmissions.
Last month Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said Nissan and Chrysler had begun to discuss product-sharing options. Ghosn has made no secret of his desire to align Nissan and Renault SA, where he is also CEO, with a North American vehicle manufacturer.
Over a year ago, Nissan and Renault broke off talks with General Motors over a comprehensive three-way alliance. Ghosn has said Nissan and Renault still could seek a U.S. partner.
Nissan sold 79,443 Versas in the United States in 2007. The car, which comes in sedan and hatchback models, was introduced in 2006.
Nissan has similar OEM arrangements with other automakers. It buys and rebadges commercial vehicles from Mazda and Isuzu and minicars from Mitsubishi and Suzuki. In reverse, it sells commercial vehicles to Isuzu and minivans to Suzuki.
In 2008, Nissan will build a mid-sized pickup for Suzuki at Nissan's factory in Smyrna, Tenn.
Under the new ownership of Cerberus Capital Management LP, Chrysler is looking for outside alliances to reduce product development costs. It already has a deal with China's Chery Automobile Co. to produce small cars for world markets, including the United States.
A car for U.S. dealerships is due in 2009.

What do you'all think will eventually happen? Will world auto production end up one giant conglomerate with a bunch of brand names; sorta like, GM with Chev, GMC, CAD, etc only on a global scale?

That's true. I do see a further reliance on "outsourcing" and further inroads by non Big 3,ala Toyota, Honda, Nissan, etc tho'
