Nissan says its diesels will meet coming strict U.S. rules that require emissions no worse than those of gasoline cars. Expand availability within the next three years of flex-fuel vehicles that can burn both gasoline and ethanol. In the United States, a flex-fuel Nissan Armada will debut next year, joining the flex-fuel Nissan Titan, which has been on sale since 2004. Both will be able to run on E85 fuel, which is 85 percent ethanol. Launch a test Nissan electric vehicle early in the next decade. Accelerate development of plug-in hybrid technology. Plug-ins can charge their batteries with household current, saving onboard fuel. Reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from global manufacturing plants by 7 percent by 2010 compared with 2005. Target a 2010 launch for a car that can go 100 kilometers on 3.0 liters of fuel, the equivalent of 77.5 mpg. Until now, European carmakers have produced a few diesel-powered 3.0-liter cars, but Nissan says its car will be gasoline powered. Set up a company to develop, make and sell lithium ion batteries, perhaps as a joint venture with an existing battery maker.
