My only experience with XM was with an external unit that plugged into the aux port. The only steering wheel controls that worked were the MODE which allowed you to select the AUX port, and the volume controls. Channel control was manually selected on the XM radio itself. I was happy with that, but the price per month drove me away. I've two external radios sitting on the shelf...

a merger has been approved for Sirius and XM....one of the federal stipulations is that they don't act like monopoly in the satellite radio industry but like a competitor to traditional radio and other similar entertainment......... in other words, "we'll approve the merger if you guys don't engage in price gouging".......should be a good result for consumers

I actually found XM to be a great system for long distance travel. It allowed me to have access to my favorite Jazz and 50s and 60s music.

Here in the NW, I would experience dropouts due to trees and our mountainous country as the XM satellite is very low on the horizon to us this far North.

Normally, my driving in my local area, the stations I listen to are loud and clear and I find no need for XM. Too bad there isn't just a One-Time rental fee for when you travel and not have to have a yearly contract.

With my XM radios, there was a setting for "Output volume" that allows you to closely match XM volume with CD or Radio.

Sounds like you have a portable unit(?), can't help you with that. Mine is the OEM tuner and the truck is pre wired for XM or Sirius, which ever one you wanted. I instilled it myself instead of paying the Dealer to do it. There are plenty of guys/gals that are using portable units that can help you. Someone well pipe in after a bit. If you don't get the answer you're after here, check out one of the other sites for some help. Good luck.

What other site?

Anyway, the easiest install I ever saw done with the OEM XM tuner was done without the added factory antenna extension or mounting bracket. The tuner was bolted to the back of the knee plate under the steering wheel. Then you buy any of the new low profile antennas plus a splitter as the tuner has two inputs. XM Fan and My Radio Store have the antennas. For the splitter Blizsafe and Terk, make one and I've seen the Blitzsafe splitter for $55. The tuner attaches to the Sat input Harness ( Under the dash).

This place has the complete kit for $360 P/N 999U9-XM
