Pictures of Home And The Ranch

Most of you know that I have been working on a web page featuring pictures of fishing and logging. I have been busy lately and haven't put any pictures in the ranch/home page.
Here are a few of the pictures that I am thinking of putting on the web page.
For those of you that haven't seen my web page the address is
http://hooktender.googlepages.com

The first couple of pictures some of you have seen before.
This is a picture of the upper ranch house. This is 8.5 miles from where I live on the lower ranch.

This is one of our smaller barns on the upper ranch. That is my older brother in the picture.

This is where I live on the lower ranch. This picture was taken about 15 years ago.The bass pond is completely surrounded by Oregon Ash trees now.

This is a picture of the upper ranch. it shows barns, corrals etc. The house is in the trees to the left, off camera.

This picture was taken about 5 miles from the upper ranch house. The State Park confiscated this land in the early 90's.

Same place.

It rains a lot here in Northern California. Last year we got over 125". Here are a few shots that show high and how low our rivers and creeks get.

Summer time on the Eel River.

Winter time at the same place. Believe it or not, the river will drop and turn green in a week if there is no rain. Then I can fish.

This is a mile downstream from the above pictures.

Same place in the winter.

This is the creek I live on.

Same view, only in the winter.

Hump-A-Kitty
Fixed male cat and fixed female dog. All of our dogs are kitty humpers.

Large mouth bass caught in the lower ranch pond.

Thumbs up

Great photos Skyhammer!

Besides the photos here, in post #1, you guys really owe it to yourselves to check out Skyhammer's webpage. Amazing stuff ... Giant fish to giant trees being harvested.

I don't why all of our dogs have been kitty humpers. We only have one dog at a time, so it is not learned behavior. We have cats that live in all of our barns, plus 3 that I have at home.
All of the dogs we have had are very selective when it comes to which kitty they choose to hump. They always choose the oldest "alpha kitty" of the group. I guess it is a dominance thing.
How many acres do we have? My great grandfather started in 1898 with 160 acres. By 1950 we had a little over 12,000 acres, with 2000 acres on the lower ranch. Now, we have 6 sections, or about 3800 acres on the upper ranch and about 600 acres on the lower ranch.
We have power and phone on the lower ranch. The upper ranch is powered by a 45k generator.
The upper ranch was/is divided by a ridge, North slope is all timber land, south slope is mainly ranch land with a few trees. The State Park has confiscated most of the North slope.
The upper ranch is doomed, we probably won't be able to keep it for more than another 10 years. Ranching has been effectively outlawed in this state. The only way a rancher can keep their land is to sell/cede part of their property rights to the State for wildlife management. A lot of the ranches have done that, but we won't. I don't like the idea of the State being able to come onto my property to do studies etc. without my permission. It is a good thing that we have no heirs, other wise we would have had no choice but the wildlife management route. We will sell to the State in 10 years or so. We will be in our 60's by then and the upkeep will be to hard on us old folks.

Here are a couple of pictures that were taken in 1980 or so. This fawn is only a few days old. It came into my parents yard scared to death. My father and Brother are feeding it with a rubber glove.
A couple of days later, the mother showed up showing signs of an encounter with either a lion or coyotes. She took her fawn back, and as far I know everything turned out O.K. I don't think there is anything more cute than baby wildlife.
