My Top Secret Test ...part one

On my on-going quest to milk as many miles from a gallon of gas as I can, I thourghly cleaned my K&N drop-in air filter and allowed it to sun dry ..... then I installed it without oiling it .... figuring that the oil would cause a possible restriction ...... since every drop of gasoline that has ever ran through any vehicle thats been in my grasp, I'm well intune with exactly what my milage is ..... results of a dry K&N showed absolutly no gain in milage ....I went through 80.14 gallons in 1492.2 miles for an average of 18.61 mpg ......exactly what I've been getting with a lightly oiled filter ..... next month, I'll put the factory paper eliment in and see how it fares....unfortunatly, I butchered up my stock air box the day I got my truck, so I haven't got any data for a stock box verses a modified box.

while you're at it, why not reassure us the Tornado really is worthless by testing it out!

I purchased a Tornado at AutoZone for 69.99 and installed it ..... used it for 6k miles, put it back in the box and returned it for a full refund ..... no fuel milage improvements what so ever ..... the throttle body spacer on my V6 Dakota was also bunk, but Airraid wouldn't refund my money on it.

I use my cruise control alot, so I don't really know what to think about his suggestion...sounds like crap to me .......I almost wrote up a little story about driving with your headlights on creates a more advantagous alignment of the atmospheric ions by causing them to become more active .... allowing your vehicle to slip through the atmosphere easier, hence, improving fuel milage ..... but then I thought that they would think I was making fun of him ..... maybe later on if I get bored, I'll pull up that thread and type them up a little ditty.

Won't foregoing the oiling of the filter allow more dirt to pass through it? I was under the impression that the slightly oiled surface caught the smaller particulates of dirt?

Yes! .... in order for an oiled guaze type filter to capture the minute particles, it MUST be oiled ..... the dry gauze will only stop large stuff like bugs, leaves, etc. ...... I do not condone anybody purposely allowing dust or dirty air to be consumed by their trusty Titan, however, the reality is that you could run your truck without any air filter on dirt roads for ump-teen thousand miles, change the oil, throw in a new air filter and never, ever, ever be able to tell the differance ......sooooo, a couple of thousand miles with an unoiled K&N is harmless ...... plus, when I get a stupid thought in my brain, it eats away at me untill I give it a try ..... and just as this test proved to me, usually my stupid thoughts gain me nothing .....

I installed my factory paper filter and my last 5 tanks of fuel took me 1723.5 miles and I used 97.334 gallons of petro ..... that averages out to only 17.35 mpg ..... 1.26 mpg less than the un-oiled K&N (which netted the same as with oil) ..... I'm not sure that I believe that the K&N is worth 1.3 mpg, but I will say that I didn't drive any faster or harder than before ... my trip from Memfrica to Pasadena was a bit windy, though ...... I feel that further testing is in order...... to be continued.

aaaaah HA! ..... just as I suspected .... my K&N was not worth the 1.3 mpg that my previous test was leading me to believe ...... with the K&N re-installed, my last 5 tanks of gas consisted of 98.161 gallons and toted me 1679.3 miles ..... using my above average mathamatical skills, I have concluded that my average mpg was 17.1 ..... however, I must throw in a disclaimer for one of those tanks of fuel ..... the tank I used between Memfrica and Atlanta, Texas (not Georgia) last Tuesday night ..... I ran much faster than usual ..... 85 to 105 mph most of that tank ...... that tank got 14.83 mpg .... If I discard that tank from my average, then it comes out to 17.82 mpg .... still a little lower than the 18.5 I usually get ..... maybe there is something about the cold winter air and fuel milage.
