Catalytic convertor failure...

well, after several ECU resets not solving the problem i finally gave in and took the beast to the dealer! turns out the trouble code that popped up was indicating a failure with the catalytic convertors, so the beast is sitting at the dealer till the parts come in tomorrow then they'll r&r the catalytic convertors and evaluate afterwards. hopefully that solves the problem however everytime i reset the ECU myself it would take almost a week for the SES light to come back on, so we'll see. anyhow, gonna also ask the service writer to have the tech to do a 2* advance. anyhow, just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. i will know more tomorrow, so i will update this thread as i learn more as to what may have caused a 2 year old truck to have it's catalytic convertor fail. i will say though, that it seems that my truck has lost power.

The only recent experience I've had with a cat was on my '97 V-6 Dakota ..... I had relocated the Inlet Air Temp. sensor from the intake manifold into the air filter housing in an attempt to lie to the computer, telling it that the intake air was colder, hense, the computer would inturn richen up the fuel mixture ..... and more fuel meant more power .....I built a custom cold air intake and I also had removed the muffler and installed a "dump pipe" about 2' past the cat ...... I was running 93 octane gas .... on one of my monthly trips from Memfrica to Stinkadena, I was crossing Arkansas when an old lady in a large Mercedes past me doing between 100 and 130 ..... I ran the little Dodge floorboarded for about an hour and a half between Littlerock and Texarkana ....... the next day, my "check engine" light came on and the truck went into some kind of "limp home" mode and I could hear rattling in the exhaust ..... my buddy that owns Deer Park muffler put my truck up on the rack and started laughing at me ..... he said that the premium fuel combined with the substained high RPM drive, combined with no muffler had melted the inside of the cat .... he pulled it off, cut it open and it looked like a large solid melted chunk of plastic ..... I use mufflers now.

On a side note ..... I also had an Airraid TB spacer and no radiator fan .....and the most MPH I saw on that jaunt was 121 going down a fairly long decline .....113 on flat ground.....I never caught the old lady either.

Obviously you should have just removed them months ago which would have avoided this whole problem!

ohh, i'll have to go to the truck and get the paper work! it says what code it was number wise, but definitely was the left catalytic convertor. something about honey cone failure... oh and as Mr.B had mentioned, there was a rattle on start up and at idle but faint, as if there was a metal coffee can with something rattling inside!

did not realize just how friggin' low those Sentras ride... almost like my lowered Civic... sucks being that low to the ground and not have the power of a Vette!!
