recovery gear????

Ok guys I been offroad several time and been thinking that if I get or someone gets stuck, I dont have any place where I can hook up a strap to my truck on the rear...
I looked for a hitch around my area but no one is selling them, and I dont want to pay mucho dinero ;D
So I have a few ideas and wanted to know if this would work or not...
number 1 (a member over at Clubfrontier Brutal has a similar set up )
Do you guys think that the titan bumper would be strong enough and hold up the abuse.
Brutal recommended runing a 1/4 metal on the back for support

parts need it... shackle (free) + mount ($15-25 at harbor tools) + 1/4 backing plate (free)

or
run tow hooks on the bottom of the bumper frame support
found this ones on ebay for like 30 dollars
I also found some at northern tools for 10 dollars

or go big pimpin' with some hummer chrome parts also found on ebay for around $150 for three, Im sure I can get only 2 or just 1 from the vendor for less. Maybe $50 or so

What do you guys think ?
Thanks

I wouldn't do it. Our bumpers are on there pretty good, but the stresses that get exerted when you are stuck, in deep mud for example, can be tremendous. A hitch/somewhere attached to the frame (that is made to withstand several thousand pounds of pull) or wrapping the strap around the axle would be the way to go. If you were going to attach pulling points your bumper, they should be reinforced with some 3/16th or similar plate welded to the frame and bumper as supports. The ones like the jeep pictured, with the little curved hooks, are simply unsafe as the strap can slip off the hook (seen it happen) or the weak hooks themselves can snap. Remember when you are pulling out a big, heavy truck that is really stuck, the forces involved can be amazingly huge. Using a strap with a big safety margin is also a good idea.

Check out Recovery Gear for a good place to buy straps etc.

no. rob is absolutely correct. our bumpers are attached to the frame but are not built to have hooks built into them for pulling/towing purposes like that of a hummer. have you seen the damage done to the titan bumper just by a pole running into it at 1mph? pretty extensive and now you're going to expect it to tow a 1/2 ton truck out? those tow hooks on that frontier look ridiculous anyhow. all you need is a trailer hitch, a good strap, and two good shackles. that's it.

from that link rob provided, that Patrol II kit is perfect

A good hitch mounted to the frame will provide your best point to secure recovery gear to.
Good luck.

As everyone said.... our bumpers front and rear are just stamped steel..... Ordering the hitch from a decent dealer shouldn't set you back more than about $300, and it's worth it for the piece of mind.

That looks like it just bolts to the underside of the bumper. I would not count on it if you are planning to use it to pull your truck out or pull another truck out. Not unless you hate your bumper and need an excuse to get a new one.
