Dana Corporation Provided Proprietary Sealing Technology for Nissan's all New 5.6L

I bet you didn't know this. (Old but good.)

TOLEDO, Ohio, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dana Corporation's
(NYSE: DCN) Engine and Fluid Management Group announced today that it has been
selected to supply its proprietary Wave-stopper(TM) multi-layered steel (MLS)
cylinder head gasket for Nissan's new 5.6L V-8 engine, which will power the
automaker's new 2004 Titan full-size pickup and an upcoming full-size SUV.

Nissan's all-new aluminum block V-8 is considerably lighter when compared
to the more traditional cast-iron block material. Additionally, reduced
cylinder bore spacing eliminates weight and creates a more compact engine
package. Sealing land geography was limited by this high-tech, compact design
and proved to be an ideal application for the Wave-stopper MLS cylinder head
gasket.
The MLS cylinder head gasket's combustion seal feature, commonly referred
to as a "stopper," is a zone of the gasket at the bore opening which is
thicker than the rest of the gasket. MLS gasket "stoppers" have traditionally
been constructed of a folded layer, an embossed spacer layer, a welded shim,
or a combination of multiple layers folded in complex relationships.
Dana's Wave-stopper incorporates a unique embossment into the selected
gasket layer(s) to provide a precisely controlled stopper action to seal the
combustion chamber. This also serves to integrate the stopper effect into an
active layer, meaning a single layer can now perform dual task functions as a
stopper and dynamic sealing bead.
Prior to the Wave-stopper, head gasket design was locked into a single
constant stopper thickness around the bore, which was dependent on steel
thickness in the fold-over layer or in the welded shim. The Wave-stopper
height can be optimized to meet the rigidity requirements of each individual
engine and can easily be contoured to provide topography if required.
"The Wave-stopper was developed as a response to rapidly changing engine
characteristics and architecture," said Mike Laisure, president of Dana's
Engine and Fluid Management Group. "This is just one example of Dana's
commitment to supply technologically relevant products that enable our
customers to meet their many durability, weight, NVH, fuel economy, and
packaging issues."
Additionally, Dana's proprietary F50 Intellicoat(TM) technology is used to
selectively screenprint the gasket, coating only the areas required for
optimal sealing.
The Dana Engine and Fluid Management Group produces a full line of
sealing, bearings, fluid system and power cylinder products that help
automakers achieve their goals in key areas such as durability, noise
vibration and harshness (NVH), fuel economy, emissions reduction, and the
management of essential operating fluids.
