VK56 freeze/expansion plugs

something a titan owner shouldn't ever have to deal with but i'm that titan owner that has the worst of luck. lol... well, apparently the cause of my anonymous coolant leak is a freeze plug on the back of the block. per the master tech who is working on my titan he suspects that when the flywheel/starter blew up the second time (twice within 18mos) debris flew into the freeze plug and pushed it in ever so slightly in, causing coolant to seep thru. 500 in labor to remove the transmission and another 120 to replace the freeze plug. i'll post up and let ya'll know what the ridiculous amount is just to replace the freeze plug.

just had to get this little culprit fixed before getting the new JWT cams and 07 intake manifold installed followed by the Doug Thorley Long tube headers and UpRev

Da*mn, Hooli Nissan should hire you for their engineering destructive testing unit!
As for the $120 to replace a freeze plug...that sounds like you're being taken to the cleaners. Pull the old plug, clean the surfaces in the block, take a punch and tap the new plug in place. Did the new plug cost a hundred bucks? Oh well, I guess I just don't understand the new math...

Any idea what caused the blown flywheel and starter?

I agree w/Red. That's an awful lot of money. What's the new plug made of, gold? Does the operation have to be blessed by a major religious leader? Something doesn't smell right here............

i know. would have been nice if nissan used my titan as the test vehicle to figure out the solutions to everyone's problems and potential problems cause i've just about had them all. not to mention a cracked power steering pressure switch that seems to be holding on by a thread, that needs replacement. i know, you're probably thinking "power steering pressure switch"???

anyways, its that labor/hr formula Nissan or any other car manufacturer uses. so in this case Nissan sees this job as a one hour job and the labor/hr here is $100/hour plus the cost of the plug. they're estimating $120-125 bucks. sounds ridiculous, cause it is. i agree with you guys. clean out the hole, pound the new one in and done. charge me for the transmission removal and reinstall but $125 for a plug replacement? same goes for the flywheel/starter. ironic that my first starter and flywheel were fine for 90,000 miles. then the replacement starter and flywheel blows after 18 months. just outside of the 12 month/12,000 mile parts warranty. so had to fork over $800 to have the starter/flywheel replaced again. since i had gone past my extended warranty and the parts warranty. sucked! as for your question Coot, i have no clue as to what caused it. all i know is i was driving to work one day and the truck started feeling rough on the freeway. was getting a weird vibration. get to work and figured i'll figure it out after work. get off work and go to start my truck up and got a loud ping, heard something ricocheting around then the sound stopped but then the starter was whining like a coffee grinder... and i had turned the ignition off and already pulled the key out but the starter kept buzzing away. only other thought was to disconnect the battery and that finally stopped the starter from spinning away. called a tow truck and had it towed to the same Nissan that serviced it before. won't make that mistake again.

Labor has gotten just stupid since the bubble burst. Had a U-joint going out on the front axle of my 1 ton but no time to replace it myself until I called and was told $700 a side. WTF!

The cheapest I could find anyone to do it for was $500 a side.

The heck with that! I've been working on it for 2 hours a day now for a week and should have both sides done by Sunday. Total cost, $34.

Whoa! Did they offer you any Vaseline? Also, does your truck use Ujoints or CVjoints on the front?

Red they are U-Joints and nothing special about them. There is a lot of time needed to take the front end apart because of all the salt used here in the winter and the Factory doesn't use Anti Seize like I'll be doing when I reassemble it. But it's not like you need any special tools or knowledge just a couple of cans of PB Blaster, paitience and a big freakin hammer.

I have a 20 ton press so once I pull the axles (Which just slide out) it won't take 15 minutes to have the old joints out and new joints in.
