Billet Aluminum Engine Block

We Titan owners have a modern V8 engine with an aluminum engine. They are cast.

Here is a video, I saw on You Tube, showing the machining of a V8 engine block from a block of solid aluminum.

The CNC Machining center is a 5axis unit. 5 Axis, for those who do not have any knowledge of the machinist trade is a machine that uses a computer and program to control 5 separate axis of motion. When you see the gyrations of the video, you will get an idea.

I saw in this video machining operations that could only be realistically done via CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining.

I spent 26 years in the machinist trade and I'm impressed!

I want one. Custom parts out the wazoo. I'll just ignore the cost of the thing and put it in my wants list. I mean its only 300,000 GBP, so whats half a million or so in the long run.

Back in my early days as an apprentice machinist, I did a tour through our NC (numerical Control) department. There we would sit down and write the program out in longhand. Imagine writhing a program to tell a robot to drive your truck. Similar process for the machine. We had to tell it to start, fwd or rev, which gear, what speed, turn left or right how fast do you turn for how long, etc. Then these instructions were punched into an IBM card, one instruction per card. Then all these cards were run through a machine that translated them to paper punched tape. These tapes were then run through a "post processor" which translated them into the individual language of each machine which produced a new machine specific tape. The machinist would load the tape, set the tools, load the material and start the program. Then the machinist would constantly have to monitor the process making adjustments to speeds and feeds.
To say it was labor intensive and error prone is an understatement.

Now days, a programmer sits at a terminal. Using CAD, draws the part on the screen. Hits a button and the CAM program translates it to a machine program. Hits a key and the program is sent over the lan to the machine. The machinist loads the tools, inserts the material and hits the start button. Out comes a new part. (overly simplified of course)

I agree Red. Before I got a chance to go back to school, I worked for Cat. I used to go and watch the CNC machines at work. The precision is amazing. Just setting up the machine takes one h3ll of a lot of time. I always wondered who wrote the programs for those things.......
