windsorFox,
Please do me a favor. Because you have the bulb out and can compare it to the ones shown here:

http://www.rallylights.com/hella/misc_bulbs.asp

Also, sometimes if you wipe the bulb against the hair at the nape of your neck, you can get the lettering to be highlited (I'm not jokeing here.) if it is an all glass bulb with no metal base. It might take a magnifiying glass and good light to see the faint markings.

Its raining here, or I'd go pull mine out to see what type and markings it had.

It seems like some jackass at Nissan has gone above and beyond the call to keep *us* from changing the bulbs in that light fixture. I think I found it. It looks like the 912 bulb here http://www.servicelighting.com/catal...m?prod=SL35869 And it's about the same 1.49" as described. That picture is of a 13 watt bulb, I think the three in the roof lamp will probably be the 18 watt version. Oh, I see the gate light is a 921, that may actually be what it is instead of 912. When I did a search it was showing 912's and 921's You should check the specs on the two to see the difference. It may be the 921 is the same but higher wattage/brighter. **** yep that's it. I looked up the 921 and it looks the same but is listed as 17.9 watts instead of 12.8 watts. It's a 921.

According to Nissan Parts, it is a 3157 bulb. I'm going to check further and see what I can do to cross it over to another number. Dealer price to me $3.57 ea.

EDIT:
However, when I looked at the bulb that was OEM installed, it is a 912 as WindsorFox reported. I have no idea the reason for the discrepancy. The 921 bulb is most likely what should be installed as it is brighter, and more closely matches the wattage shown in the bulb data table. The 3157 is also an 18 watt bulb and most likely would fit in the socket as there are provisions for the plastic bar shown just above the terminals.

Exclamation This is driving me nuts.

I spent time looking at the bulbs online and felt the 3157 should fit because it appeared to have the same style base.

Boy, how confused I am now that I've pulled the high mounted stop light out and looked at it and then looked at a 3157 bulb at the store. I don't see how it can fit. It is much wider and the contact points are quite different.

So, its back to the dealer and parts store to run this issue down.

I'll post later when I have this resolved.

you know i went through this same problem when i bought my old s10. was replacing sometail lights and had a har time getting one to work....i spent a while at napa with a screw driver trying different bulbs....i believe while the 3157 look to hae he same base...it has a tab on the side thats a bit wider and doesnt fit. i would swing into your local napa and tell them to look up what you need. the guy was really cool... we had like 3 different packs of bulbs open for "test" fitting i only had to buy the set that fit. BUT i have the LED third brakelight...and love it. so thats always an option.
