VVT is an interesting system to bridge between 2 valve per cylinder and 4 valve per cylinder engines.

Its the ability of the heads to flow air into the combustion that controls power. Two valve per cylinder engines were more efficient in lower rpm regimes. 4 valves per cylinder engines flow better at high rpms and tend to produce higher HP at those rpms.

In order to have an efficient engine at all rpms the "VVT" system allows the engine to change over from two to four valves per cylinder depending on the rpm.

Currently the HONDA VFR 800cc motorcycle uses this system. I'm not sure if it provides the benefit expected or it was merely a "tour-de-force" of technology for HONDA. For sure the technology has proven itself in automobile engines.

As I commented on another thread, It amazes me the complexity in modern vehicles.
